Ashtanga Yoga Weekend: From Foundations to Seated Poses

Ashtanga yoga is a dynamic practice built to develop strength and flexibility in equal measure. As the fertile ground from which Vinyasa, Iyengar, and Jivamukti yoga all emerged, it remains the foundational system underlying much of modern yoga practice. Its hallmark — linking movement to breath within structured, progressive sequences — creates a moving meditation for exploring the inner landscape.

This weekend takes you from first principles through to a deeper exploration of primary series' seated postures, across three sessions you're welcome to join in full or individually.

Friday, 17:30–20:00, introduces the Ashtanga system: its progressive set sequences, the sun salutation as foundation, the vinyasa method of linking postures, and alignment principles in the standing postures. We'll explore tristana — the union of breath, bandha (energy locks), and drishti (gaze points) — that stabilizes body and mind, and look at how to build short forms for an efficient self-practice. A practice session is included in the workshop format.

Saturday, 14:00–16:30, moves into the seated postures of primary series, breaking down technique from dandasana onward — lifting and jumping back and through, and hip openers to prepare for the marichyasana variations.

Sunday, 10:00–12:30, brings it together in a led practice through the sequence, opening up into workshop mode at key points to break down complex poses (bhujapidasana, kurmasana etc.), with supplementary opener poses to support these postures.

Suitable for beginners through experienced practitioners — join one session or all three.

Schedule

Friday, 17:30–20:00 — Foundations(open to all levels)
Sun salutations as foundation, the vinyasa method of linking postures, synchronizing breath and movement, and alignment principles in the standing postures. Saturday, 14:00–16:30 — Seated Postures Deep Dive(open to all levels)
Warm-up to dandasana, breaking down the seated postures, technique for lifting and jumping back/through, and hip openers for the marichyasana variations.

Sunday, 10:00–12:30 — Led Practice with a Deep Dive(previous experience practicing Ashtanga yoga recommended)
